Architectural Design Studio I - Project 2 (Life Capsule)

It was the second project to be done for this module and it was one of the major project in this semester. For this project, we were required to carry out a research on the human ergonomics and antropometrics which to be applied later in the creation and construction of our scale 1:1 model.

The objectives of the project are as listed :

1. To further the student's concern about elementary user needs.
2. To introduce and create an awareness of the scale and proportion of the human body.
3. To create human anthropometry and ergonomics relate shape the space.
4. To introduce the role of human behaviors in shaping the space and dictating activities.
5. To introduce basic design principles and terminologies on deciding spatial and form configuration.
6. To create and work on full scale installation in order to further visualize efficiency, functionality, quality of space and articulation form.

We were required to chose a client with a specific background/occupation for us to understand clearer about her/his needs, desires and basic activities then execute the design the project requirements into our 1:1 model. It had to be done in a group of 4-5 members and together with Sharon Lim, Hsuan Lin, Chee Siang, Jia Hui and I we had formed a group of 5 members.

We proceeded to choosing a client with an occupation of  nature wildlife photographer and the next thing we did was to write a client narrative based on his basic needs and requirements. And through the process of constructing the life capsule, we had to be aware and concerned of the humans antropometrics and ergonomics to make sure that the design and space will be at its most comfort state for people to be in it.

We had decided to use paper tubes instead of cardboard in making our life capsule as the natural straight and tough look of paper tubes can easily be related to the nature of erection of trees in a forest. Besides, by using only paper tubes in the construction we would also create a more united whole look of it.

We had done a few sketch models based on the variation of designs each time after having discussion within the group members and our tutor, Mr. James.

We went to many of the printing shops around to collect the paper tubes needed, at the same time we were actually recycling their wastage.

In the mid of sorting out the tubes according to diameter and length.

We had tried out on different methods to join the tubes together and in the end we succeeded by inserting model board in between both tubes and wrapped the joint with duct tape.

Alfred and Jia Hui were working on the construction of one of the furniture.

After completed this assignment, I had learnt about the importance of team spirit in making the success of a group project. Throughout the days of doing this project, each of the members cooperated well and I had also learnt how to think from the perspectives of my own members and to understand about their points and views. Besides, this project had taught me more in understanding the human scale and proportion, ergonomics and how all things should be placed together in constructing a 1:1 scaled space. Moreover, I had learnt the way of effective working as we completed our project earlier than expected because of the well planning of time and the commitment of every member in the group. It was indeed a wonderful experience to work with my group members as all of them were really responsible and committed to the project.
