Architectural Design Studio I - Project 3 (Dreamscape for the self : Hideout)

This was the final project assigned to us for this module and this project was separated into two parts.

For Project 3A, we were required to form a group a 5 members and pick a movie from the list given by the lecturer. We were then required to review and look into the architecture of the city and the design of the city scape. We needed to record down our observations by providing 10 screenshots of the key scenes from the movie to further discussion with our tutor. The submission requirement for task A was to produce a site material based on the essence of the architecture in the selected movie for the purpose of developing and showcasing our final project which was part 3B.

The objectives of the project are as listed :

1. To further he students ability to create and develop a conceptual narrative.
2. To introduce and create an awareness in understanding the dimensional requirements of the
human body (anthropometrics and ergonomics)
3. To explore and apply basic design principles and terminologies.
4. To further the student’s ability to create and develop a conceptual narrative
5. To be able to consider objective and subjective parameters in the design process to create a space
this is practical yet poetic.
6. To explore how the selection and application of materials in relation to the sensory experience of
space.
7. To be able to select and make different study models (sketch, concept, diagram, section and
development models)

PROJECT 3A

The movie my group (Sharon Lim, Sheilly, Alfred and Jia Hui) had chosen the movie "Aeon Flux". We had extracted the essence of the architecture and cityscape from the movie to be put into our site model and we did our site models by using the material plaster of Paris.

We started off by doing a mock-up model of our design using cardboard.

We had also make a small mold to try out the plaster.

We failed a few times to get the right and exact proportion of water and plaster.

PROJECT 3B

For the second part of this final project, we were required to pick a client from the list given and design a hideout based on the client's character, personality, career or life. The size of the hideout shall not be more than 70% of the site and not more than 12m high. The hideout should be showcased in the form of a model at the scale of 1:50.

I had chosen Marilyn Monroe as my client and I did a lot of research before moving on to sketch out my designs. I watched a few documentary of hers and also looked for information about her through internet.

I had done a few sketch models before moving on to finalizing the design of my hideout.

First of all, this project was indeed a very meaningful and great experience for me as it was my first time to really start designing, process it a few times, refine and come out with the final design. It has taught me a lot in the way of getting to know more about the ergonomics, scale and proportion and the basic knowledge about designing a building. Besides, I had picked up the skill to handle a major project by my own as it was an individual project. I'm also able to translate and express my ideas through the form designing a space based on a conceptual narrative.

At times, I struggled and failed a few times while generating ideas for the designs but I'm glad that I pulled it through after having discussions with my tutor and group members. It was an amazing journey to have the chance to be involved in project like this and I also learnt that one's commitment is really important in producing the best results of all. I had learnt how to be more responsible and concerned about my own task and to manage my time better to make it before the submission date. Besides, I had gained so much knowledge of model making through the use of different materials to complement my design better. The experiences gained throughout the process of completing this project is precious and also irreplaceable.

I would really like to thank my tutor, Mr. James for his guidance all this while and to my group members who have been helping out all the time. It was a great journey working with you all.

Architecture Culture and History I - Project 3 (3D Abstraction Model)

Project 3, which is also the final project of this module.
For this final project, we were required to create a 3D abstraction model to communicate with our precedent and conceptual analysis, only the most important and significant features of the building should be extracted and put into the 3D model.

The building we were assigned to was Salisbury Cathedral, and for my group which was consisted of Tan Chee Siang, Tan Hsuan Lin and I has decided to focus more on the spire of Salisbury Cathedral as we thought it was the most significant and historical feature of the building, we had also extracted the essence of the gothic architecture style including flying buttresses, ribbed vaulting and pointed arches.

The model was done in the scale of 1:400.

As for the final product, we had attached a mirror next to it to create optical illusion and also added lighting to express better about the light penetration of the building.

Through this project, I had learnt how to coordinate within group members and to adapt faster in working as a group to present the most effective way of working. Besides, it was a great experience for all of us as it was our first time to create a small model using balsa wood and it was indeed challenging but fun! I had also improved a lot on my workmanship/craftsmanship as I got practice the right way of cutting and building a study model. And it really made me into a more patient and careful person after completing this project.
